Backhand Drop Volley Grip and Preparation

Backhand Drop Volley Grip and Preparation(C)2006 Jeff Cooper licensed to About.com, Inc.
A drop volley should be soft, short, and low, with backspin to decrease its forward motion when it bounces. The Continental grip used here lends itself to the upwardly tilted racquet face you will use to cut under the ball. An Eastern backhand grip would also work, but you would have to turn your wrist more to create the tilt. The left hand on the throat of the racquet will help you turn your shoulders properly and set the racquet in the right starting position for the swing. Your backswing should coincide with your right foot stepping forward, which turns you and brings you closer to the net.
