What will help me return kick (topspin or twist) serves?

By , About.com Guide

Question: What will help me return kick (topspin or twist) serves?
Answer: Many, perhaps most, players would rather return a hard, low serve than one with a ton of kick, because the kick serve so often jumps well above a height at which they're comfortable swinging.

If your timing is very good, try moving forward to take the ball on the rise, before it gets up to that uncomfortable height. This is your most aggressive option: it will get your return back early, which gives your opponent less time to react.

If hitting on the rise is too difficult, and the kick serve isn't terribly powerful, try backing up far enough that the ball will drop back to a height you like. Your aggressiveness will be limited by your being so far back, but if you return deep, you'll have a good chance to get into the point.

Meeting the ball high on your forehand might become fairly easy once you practice hitting these shots with an aggressive topspin, but your better opponents will learn to aim the kick serves toward your backhand. When you can't run around these, and you're forced to hit a high backhand, try using a firm slice drive.
