Question: When should I try to use slice on my service return?
Answer: The most common reasons for using slice on a return are
- Slice does not require as long a backswing as topspin, so it's easier to prepare when rushed by a fast serve. (Flat shots can also use a short backswing.)
- Slice allows a point of contact farther back than topspin, giving the returner a tiny bit of extra time to hit the ball.
- Slice is easier to hit than topspin (or flat, usually) on very low, very wide, and, on backhands especially, very high balls.
- Slice is ideal for a "chip and charge" approach-shot return.
