When should I try to use slice on my service return?

By , About.com Guide

Question: When should I try to use slice on my service return?
Answer: The most common reasons for using slice on a return are
  1. Slice does not require as long a backswing as topspin, so it's easier to prepare when rushed by a fast serve. (Flat shots can also use a short backswing.)
  2. Slice allows a point of contact farther back than topspin, giving the returner a tiny bit of extra time to hit the ball.
  3. Slice is easier to hit than topspin (or flat, usually) on very low, very wide, and, on backhands especially, very high balls.
  4. Slice is ideal for a "chip and charge" approach-shot return.
