Generally, to find the right position to receive serve, draw an imaginary line from the server through the point at the center of your service box (where the two diagonals of that rectangle would meet), then get on that line. How far up or back you would play depends on many factors, but you should still be on that line, unless you're adjusting for some specific trait of the server or favoring your forehand or backhand.
