At the net, you want to shift toward the side from which your opponent will hit. This may seem at first to leave too much room for the cross-court pass, but by stepping forward, you can cut off the cross-court angle. A down-the-line pass has no angle to cut off, so you need to be closer to that side to reach the passing shot.
