Q.  What physical techniques can I use to improve my reaction time on serve returns?

A. 

  1. Bounce around on your feet a few times before the server begins. This will stimulate your body and mind to a higher level of readiness and also signal your opponent that you're ready and energetic.
  2. As the server tosses the ball, get into ready position, take a couple of small steps forward, then as she swings, do a split-step, timed so that you'll see the ball coming off her racquet just as you are descending in your split-step.
