Gonzales Great, but Federer Better

Sunday January 28, 2007
Roger Federer claimed his tenth Grand Slam singles title at the Australian Open today, defeating Fernando Gonzales 7-6 (2), 6-4, 6-4. Roger became the first player to win a major without dropping a set since Bjorn Borg at the 1980 French Open. Fernando played quite well, showing no significant nervousness on this biggest match of his career. Roger's serve and forehand were a little off in the first set, and Fernando had two set points serving for the match at 5-4, but Roger's ability to raise the level of his game when it counts most is a big part of his greatness. Federer played the second and third sets more in his usual, brilliant form. Fernando stayed close throughout, though, and he has much to be proud of and to look forward to for the rest of the season.

I sure hope they replay it a bunch because I missed the live show.

Off Topic:
The articles on your site would be a smoother read if a lot of related topics were placed on one page so that the reader wouldn’t have to click one question, click back, click another, back, and so on.
An example is the court surfaces section. The reader has to click a link for each individual question, and then click again to return to the page of questions. Considering the response to each question was a short paragraph, it would have been best to combine them all onto one page.
Now, I’m not blaming you or anything. My guess is there are some things that just can’t be helped, like About.com’s awkward choice of web layout.

I am totally disgusted with this country, in general and, specifically, with all the networks. On a weekend when there were no NFL Playoff games I would have, according to the USA Today, had to watch the Australian Final at 3:30 AM on ESPN2. Neither tennis nor Roger Federer get any real respect here except from savvy sportswriters and the people involved with the sport, who most realize that Roger (right now) is the greatest player the game has ever seen. Barring any serious injury, he is a shoe-in to break Sampras’ record of 14 Grand Slam wins. As much as I loved Pete’s game, Roger is better and, if he ever wins the French (which was Pete’s ‘Achilles Heel’) their will be no discussion-period. I know that it all boils down to money and, if it would have been Sampras vs. Agassi, we would have been watching the replay on Sunday night instead of stupid NASCAR or women’s basketball or poker or something else far less significant. If I had one wish now concerning this, it would be that every single tennis player IN THE WORLD boycott the Stupor Bowl. I know I am.

Roger doesn’t deserve respect.

Federer couldn’t hold McEnroe’s jock strap.

Even if that statement were true, it in no way counters what David Stuckrath said. American sports tv is racist.
