How do I choose a good instructor?

By Jeff Cooper, About.com

Question: How do I choose a good instructor?

Answer: The success of a teacher-student relationship depends, to some extent, on the right match of personalities, but for most kids, the right instructor will:

  • praise generously
  • welcome equally kids who struggle and those who learn easily
  • find the stroking style that suits the student instead of trying to create copies of himself
  • build an understanding of the reasons behind his recommendations
  • emphasize fun
  • have a studied knowledge of tennis: certification is a good start
