Where should I aim if I'm going for a groundstroke winner?

By , About.com Guide

Question: Where should I aim if I'm going for a groundstroke winner?
Answer: Consider where you can put the ball confidently and where your opponent will have the most trouble getting to it. Here are your main options:
  • Deep crosscourt, including the popular inside-out version, gives you the lowest net to hit over and the longest depth to use.
  • A down-the-line winner is slightly more difficult: you need to make sure you're not late, and you might want a little more topspin to bring the ball down sooner.
  • The sharply angled crosscourt into the "side pocket," the corner of the service box, is relatively difficult.
  • A drop shot, if you have the finesse, provides effective variety.
