How should I return serve against a serve-and-volley player?

By Jeff Cooper, About.com

Question: How should I return serve against a serve-and-volley player?

Answer: Here are your main options:

  1. A crosscourt pass aimed toward the corner of the service box, using topspin, is fairly difficult.
  2. A down-the line pass is usually easier than crosscourt.
  3. Using topspin, you can get the ball to dip toward the server's feet, forcing him to hit a difficult volley or half volley.
  4. A low slice can also drop at the server's feet, but topspin, if you can execute it, gives the server less time to react.
  5. A lob can be effective, especially if the server comes in quickly or has a weak overhead. Aim toward her backhand side.
