What mental techniques can I use to improve my alertness on service returns?

By Jeff Cooper, About.com

Question: What mental techniques can I use to improve my alertness on service returns?

Answer:

  1. Trying to look more alert will often help you actually be more alert.
  2. To block out distracting thoughts and to focus on what's most important, say to yourself as you're getting ready, "Only the ball. Only the ball." As the server tosses the ball, say to yourself, "Baalll."
  3. To help your timing, try saying to yourself, "Hit" when the server hits, then "Bounce" when the ball bounces, then "Hit" when it's time for you to hit the return.
