When should I try to use topspin on my service return?

By , About.com Guide

Question: When should I try to use topspin on my service return?
Answer: The more topspin you attempt on a return, the better your timing needs to be, because a flatter swing keeps the racquet and the ball lined up for a longer time. A slower serve gives you a longer timing window.

Hit topspin when

  1. you want to be more aggressive
  2. you see the ball well
  3. you have your racquet ready in plenty of time, often on slower serves
  4. the ball is not too low or high for your topspin swing
