Top 3 Tennis Racquets for Advanced All-Court Players (2002-3)

By , About.com Guide

These racquets are designed for players with powerful baseline strokes and an aggressive net game. They offer good comfort and control on groundstrokes and high maneuverability at net.

1. Yonex Ultimum RQ Ti-1700 Long Mid-Plus

The consensus (see longer review) indicates that this 11-ounce racquet, though one of the lighter choices for an advanced player, offers very good comfort. Its open stringing pattern produces good spin without being too lively for excellent control. Balanced 3/4" head light, it is also highly maneuverable.

2. Wilson Hyper Pro Staff 6.1 Standard Length

This racquet offers excellent control and plenty of spin, but limited power. Its 12.3 ounces make it one of the heavier racquets available, and that weight provides a very solid, shock-resistant feel, but with a 1 1/4" head-light balance, it's still quick at the net.

3. Wilson Hyper Pro Staff Surge 5.1

The Surge 5.1, at 11 ounces balanced 7/8" head-light, is highly maneuverable but still solid on groundstrokes. On powerful, flatter serves, it could use a bit more thump, but its open stringing will lend itself to effective spin. With a frame in the middle of the flexibility spectrum, the Surge offers a good balance of control and power for players with moderately fast swings.
