Andy provides a good demonstration here of how to release the ball toss: He releases the ball fairly high, his hand opens up like a flower so that all of his fingers release it simultaneously, and he watches the ball well.

Roddick uses a greatly abbreviated wind-up, bringing his racquet straight up and back instead of down and back in the classic, long loop. A longer loop backswing favors a smoother serve motion, but smooth isn't the word that comes to mind for Andy's serve: the better word would be explosive.
