Date of Birth: 7/29/1980

Nation: Chile

Height: 6'0"

Weight: 180 lbs

Turned Pro: 1999

Best Singles Grand Slams: Runner-Up at Australian Open in 2007. Quarterfinalist at Wimbledon in 2005, at Roland Garros in 2003, and at the US Open in 2002.

Plays: Right-handed, with one-handed backhand.

Basic Style: Power baseliner.

Greatest Strengths: Exceptionally powerful forehand with strong topspin and often extreme angles. Serve consistent, fairly potent, and especially tough on big points. Good defensive slice backhand. Good speed and athleticism.

Room for Improvement: Backhand not nearly as dangerous as forehand, so some players can attack it. Fernando used to go for broke on almost every stroke, but he's quickly learning to wait for the right moments to unleash his biggest shots.
