Maria has two main forehand strokes. One is fairly conventional, where she follows through to her left. The other, which she hits more often, brushes upward with such a vertical motion that she finishes with the racquet over her right shoulder. Here, she has just met the ball with the latter type of swing, and you can see that the racquet has moved farther upward than the ball has moved forward. The nearly full Western grip Maria uses fits this sharply upward swing well.
