Dinara Safina Photo #8: Squat Overhead

Dinara shows us a moderate example here of something we don't often get to see in the pro game, a squat shot. Players most often use a squat when they set up for a bounced overhead and then realize that the ball isn't bouncing as high as expected. With an overhead swing, meeting the ball too low in relation to the body usually causes an error, so it makes sense to drop the body lower to accommodate an unexpectedly low ball. You'll also see players squat to hit a high volley when the ball comes straight at their heads, but given Dinara's comfortable distance to the left of the ball here, she would have no need to squat for a volley.
