Late Point of Contact

Late Point of ContactJamie Squire / Getty Images
In contrast to the previous photo, this one illustrates a point of contact that is clearly less than ideal. The one-handed backhand requires that the arm extend forward from the body, which means that it must be met earlier than a forehand or a two-handed backhand. Here Amelie is meeting the ball quite late, so she has to lean her upper body backward in an attempt to compensate. She might have managed good topspin on this backhand, but it's safe to say that she couldn't have driven it with the kind of power she would have on a ball met earlier.
