What kind of balls should I buy?

By Jeff Cooper, About.com

Question: What kind of balls should I buy?

Answer: As a beginner, you're unlikely to notice much difference between one brand of tennis ball and another in terms of playing characteristics with new balls. If you keep in mind the following, you'll probably be happy with your choice:

  • Buy extra-duty felt balls for play on hard courts, but regular duty for clay.
  • Avoid the ultra-cheap balls that come in a bag instead of a pressurized can. The better pressureless balls are pretty good, but they cost at least as much as pressurized balls.
  • Balls with a slightly larger diameter intended to slow them down are meant for beginners, but most players at every level prefer the standard size.
