Should I use an open or closed stance on my backhand?

By , About.com Guide

Question: Should I use an open or closed stance on my backhand?
Answer: By far, most players hit backhands with a fairly closed stance. Some two-handers hit semi-open, but few one-handers do. Compared to a one-hander, the mechanics of a two-hander are more like a forehand, which is now commonly hit open-stanced. One-handers might get some extra power with a more open stance, but most will pay too high a price in loss of control and possibly elbow injury. Two-handers can experiment more safely, but the whipping action that drives forehands hit with an open stance does not work nearly as freely on a two-handed backhand.
