Wimbledon Week One Recap, Week Two Predictions

Continued from Page One:

The men's top quarter will offer some good fourth-round action, with Pete Sampras taking on Roger Federer, who almost single-handedly defeated the U.S. Davis Cup team for Switzerland. Federer will be a real test for Sampras, but Sampras should prevail. Todd Martin and Tim Henman both have games well-suited to grass. Henman should prolong British hopes, but only by one more round. Henman will make Sampras work, but Sampras should get through to the semis.

The second quarter is just about as loaded with unpredictable players as could be. If the brilliant version of Marat Safin shows up for the fourth round against Arnaud Clement, Safin will win easily, or Clement could just as easily face the other Safin, who will self-destruct. Goran Ivanisevic served 41 aces to eliminate rising star Andy Roddick in the third round, but Goran makes Safin look steady. His opponent, Greg Rusedski, is no slouch in the serving department either, owning the 149 mph world record. I'll make one prediction for this match: short points.

In the third quarter, Patrick Rafter's unsurpassed serve-and-volley game should carry him comfortably into the semifinals.

Andre Agassi and Lleyton Hewitt should face off for their quarter's spot in the semis. Despite Hewitt's excellent results in the grass-court warm-ups preceding Wimbledon, I'll pick Agassi to win in a tight and entertaining battle of quickness and precise groundstrokes.

The winner of the top quarter, most likely Sampras, should make it through the top half pretty easily to the final. The bottom half has three strong contenders, Rafter, Agassi, and Hewitt. I'll put my prediction in line with my hope and pick Rafter to meet Sampras for a rematch of last year's final.

Our forum predictions are leaning toward Rafter, followed by Sampras on the men's side. I'm not the only one having trouble predicting the women's side, with Capriati, Serena Williams, and Davenport getting roughly equal votes. Come venture a prediction of your own.
