Wimbledon 2000 Online

Dateline: 06/27/00

The oldest and still most prestigious of tennis tournaments began its two-week run on the 26th. Following are some Internet resources that will enrich your Wimbledon experience.

Let's start at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, whose official The Championships Wimbledon site features live and archive video, scores, schedules, draws, interviews, analysis, trivia, and radio.

For a wider range of perspectives on the matches and players, try some of the news and online magazine sites. CBS Sportsline always has interesting opinion and analysis pieces, and the British Sporting Life is sure to be in high gear right now. Tennis Week specializes in depth, and Tennis Magazine does a nice job of tying playing advice to pro matches.

History has exceptional prominence at Wimbledon. The official site provides the best narrative, with some wonderful old photographs and the rolls of past champions. Although Wimbledon was, in 1877, the first tennis tournament, the game itself has roots hundreds of years older. For a look at the original, indoor game, visit The Royal Tennis Court site.

If you're not lucky enough to have a hard-to-get ticket to Wimbledon, TV is your best alternative. In the US, TNT provides afternoon coverage on weekdays, and NBC picks up the weekends and the last couple of rounds. Jim Courier and Martina Navratilova are providing the expert commentary on TNT and doing a much better job than their big-network competition.

If there's any place where Anna Kournikova gets as much "press" as she does on the Web, it's at Wimbledon, where the infamous British tabloids use various, usually tasteless, pics of Anna to pump up their sales. Is this kind of attention good or bad for tennis? Add your voice to our forum discussion.
