Kuerten Barely Survives for the Week Two Predictions

Continued from Page One:

After a multitude of withdrawals and first and second round upsets, the women's draw has been proceeding much more on form leading into the quarterfinals. The top half of the draw still has the two players I most expected to advance, Martina Hingis and Jennifer Capriati, as well as Serena Williams, who is a major threat on other surfaces, but not usually as much so on clay. The bottom half, however, lost its top two contenders, Venus Williams and Amelie Mauresmo, in the first round. The two remaining seeds there are Justine Henin, whom I expected to do well, and Kim Clijsters, who is more of a surprise on clay.

Here are my predictions for women:

Quarterfinals:

Hingis (1) vs. Schiavone: Hingis in two.

Capriati (4) vs. Williams (6): Capriati in three.

Clijsters (12) vs. Mandula: Clijsters in two.

Krasnoroutskaya vs. Henin (14): Henin in two.

Semifinals:

Hingis vs. Capriati: Capriati in three.

Clijsters vs. Henin: Henin in three.

Final:

Capriati vs. Henin: Capriati in three.
