The area of your stringbed where the strings provide the maximum rebound energy to the ball is usually closer to your hand than the other two sweet spots. The tips section below addresses the resulting trade-off.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 5 minutes
Here's How:
- Hold your racquet so that 4-5 inches of its handle rests on a sturdy table and the remaining length of the racquet extends out away from the table, with the stringbed horizontal.
- Either press down hard on the racquet handle or clamp it to the table.
- Drop a tennis ball from 18 inches above the racquet and note the rebound height.
- Keep dropping the tennis ball from exactly the same height onto different areas of the stringbed.
- The area where you find the greatest rebound height is your power sweet spot.
Tips:
- On swings where your racquet whips out from your wrist, such as on a serve, your racquet's speed increases greatly toward its tip, so hitting farther out than your power sweet spot can produce the maximum ball speed.
- At the very tip of your racquet, you might find a falsely high rebound effect caused by rebound energy from your racquet's frame.
- See the links below for how to find your other two sweet spots.
