Using a racquet with the wrong grip size can hurt your game and your arm. Learn how to measure your hand for the proper grip size.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 5 minutes
Here's How:
- On your dominant hand, note that your palm has three main creases.
- Hold your hand flat, palm up, with the fingers alongside one another.
- Measure from the middle crease of your palm, up the line between your middle and ring fingers, to a point equal to the height of the tip of your ring finger.
- It's more accurate to measure from an inch mark on the ruler than from the end, but don't forget to subtract the extra inches.
- Round your measurement up to the nearest eighth of an inch.
Tips:
- For the average woman, this measurement will fall between 4 1/8' and 4 3/8'; for average men, between 4 1/2' and 4 3/4'.
- Most models of junior racquets offer a very limited selection of grip sizes.
- You'll do better playing with too large a grip than too small, but you can fatten a grip by 1/8 with an overwrap much more easily than you can reduce a too-large grip.
