Serena Wins Her Third Wimbledon Singles Title

Saturday July 4, 2009
Serena Williams won her third Wimbledon singles title Saturday, defeating her sister Venus, 7-6, 6-2. Serena was sharper off the ground than her older sister, the five-time champion, but her serving was the biggest difference. She lost only eight points on her own serve in the entire match. Venus has the fastest-ever serve in women's tennis and a heavier slice serve, but Serena hits her first serves as hard on average and more consistently because they have more topspin. Venus's first serves are flatter and thus have a lower margin of clearance over the net at a given speed. Serena's second serve joins her first in clear superiority over the rest of the women's field. She produces an ideal combination of kick and power that rarely gives her opponents the opportunities to attack that they're used to against other players.
