Venus and Serena Starting Best
Tuesday June 23, 2009
Venus and Serena Williams say the one thing each really hopes for in the women's draw is to see her sister in the opposite half so that they won't have to meet until the final. Another all-Williams Wimbledon final looks as likely this year as any. Top seed Dinara Safina and recent world number ones Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic are struggling, and 2004 champion Maria Sharapova is still playing her way back into form after nine months off recovering from injury. The most exciting challengers may be the young up-and-comers Caroline Wozniacki and Victoria Azarenka. Wozniacki won the warm-up event at Eastbourne, and Azarenka has the firepower to threaten anyone. The five-time Wimbledon champion Venus and two-time champion Serena, who often make major finals despite tough early rounds, look sharp right from the start, though, as they won their first-round matches much more easily than did Safina, Jankovic, Ivanovic, Sharapova, or Wozniacki.
