Wimbledon Men's Draw Reshuffled After Nadal Drops Out
Friday June 19, 2009
Top seed Rafael Nadal announced Friday evening that the tendinitis in his knees has not healed fully enough for him to defend his Wimbledon title. Because the draw had already been set, Juan Martin del Potro, the fifth seed, had to be moved into the top slot, and a few others, including James Blake, also moved up. The third seed, Andy Murray, is now the highest ranking player in his half of the draw, and having just won a warm-up event on grass at Queen's, he has the hopes of Great Britain riding high for its first native male Wimbledon champion in 73 years. At the top of the other half of the draw, though, is second seed and five-time champion Roger Federer, who will be trying for his record-breaking 15th career Grand Slam singles title.
