Serena Prevails in Superb US Open Final
Monday September 8, 2008
Serena Williams won 6-4, 7-5 over Jelena Jankovic in an outstanding women's singles final at the US Open Sunday. The combination of the exceptional speed of both players with their abilities to hit mixtures of angle, depth, and power created lots of long, exciting points. The key difference in this very close contest was Serena's superior serve, which helped her escape numerous break points. Jankovic maintained a remarkably happy, comfortable demeanor throughout her first major final, showing no major signs of nerves to impede her performance. For Serena, this was familiar territory, her third US Open singles title, but you would hardly know it from her reaction upon winning match point, where she bounced around the court with exuberance to match any kid's.
