Jelena to Play Serena for the US Open Singles Title

Friday September 5, 2008
This year, the ticket to the US Open women's semifinals was a three-syllable name ending in an a. Jelena Jankovic advanced to her first final in a major today by defeating Elena Dementieva 6-4, 6-4. In the final, scheduled for Saturday unless rain interferes, Jelena will face Serena Williams, who dismissed Dinara Safina 6-3, 6-2 in the other semifinal. Serena has much stronger first and second serves, more powerful groundstrokes, and excellent speed, but Jelena defends extremely well, so she'll have a chance if Serena is less than sharp.
