Marat Safin advanced to his third Australian Open final by ending Roger Federer's 26-match winning streak in a high-quality, 5-7, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(6), 9-7 semifinal. He will face Lleyton Hewitt, who defeated Andy Roddick 3-6, 7-6(3), 7-6(4), 6-1 in the other semifinal. Hewitt enters his first Australian Open final hoping to end a 29-year Aussie drought in men's singles here.
Serena Williams evened her head-to-head record (2-2) with Maria Sharapova, surviving three match points to prevail 2-6, 7-5, 8-6 in a contest of power, speed, depth, and angles. Lindsay Davenport struggled through to defeat Nathalie Dechy 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 in the other semifinal and make her first Grand Slam final in five years.
